Last week, we lodged our response to the National Transport Commission and Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts‘ consultation on the proposed Automated Vehicle Safety Law.
In reading the consultation documents, we found them to be invaluable to bring ourselves up to date on recent developments in Australian Automated Vehicle (AV) regulatory frameworks. The detail in the background documents presenting the evolution of the regulatory environment over the past few years has given us a good appreciation for why current regulations are where they are now.
Furthermore, we are also grateful for the clear articulation of concepts and ideas relevant to automated vehicles, and the consistent use of terminology in the consultation documents. This has helped us to clarify our own thinking about the nature and characteristics of manual/automated driving – or perhaps we should say the Dynamic Driving Task (DDT). We are now better able to adhere to a consistent language when discussing the topic with colleagues.
